The opportunity

Leduc County is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Horticultural Utility Worker to join our team. Reporting to the Manager – Agricultural Services, this exciting opportunity maintains the plantings and aesthetics within the plantings on Leduc County properties. As a member of the Agricultural Services team, the Horticultural Utility Worker supports the achievement of the department’s operational deliverables.

You enjoy working outside and take pride in beautifying the Leduc County plant beds. You can handle some moderate physical effort out in the field when needed and you work well with a team but can prioritize and complete tasks independently. What you will do

  • Contributes to the maintenance of the department’s operational deliverables and agricultural programs by performing work and adhering to departmental and municipal standards.
    • Assists with the development of plans and maintains plantings on County properties.
    • Inspects, remedies and maintains the overall health of plantings.
    • Conducts safe herbicide application under the direction of a licensed Pesticide Applicator.
    • Operates and maintains the underground irrigation system.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance checks of horticultural equipment and machinery.
  • Operates trucks, trailers, tractors, and live power equipment such as mowers and roto-tillers.
  • Assists in the maintenance of municipal right-of-ways, park reserves, and public land.
  • Adheres to guidelines as set out in Leduc County’s policies and administrative directives.
  • Accountable for working in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and participation in the Health, Safety and Wellness Program.
  • Performs related duties as required and assigned.

What you need to succeed

Must-have

A high school diploma, a Class 5 Alberta driver’s license and knowledge of horticultural pests and management of pest problems, landscape/home garden materials and design concepts.

Nice to have

Post-secondary education or enrolled in Agricultural Horticulture, Plant Science or related field of study or an agricultural background and/or experience is considered an asset.

We offer a competitive hourly salary of between $18.49 and $23.79. This opportunity is seasonal full-time and is 40 hours per week scheduled Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with the possibly of some extended hours to meet operational requirements.

The opportunity is temporary full-time and is 40 hours per week scheduled Monday to Friday, with some extended hours to meet operational requirements. The office is located at 101-1101 5 St. Nisku, AB.
