PLATOON CHIEF

 

The opportunity

Leduc County is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Platoon Chief to join our team. Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief - Operations, this exciting opportunity manages and monitors the safety and work activities of all firefighters in the county, is responsible for oversight of fire personnel and the administration of the fire stations. As a leader within the Fire Services department, the Platoon Chief is a contributor to the achievement of the department’s operational objectives.

What you will do

  • Provides oversight and delivery of emergency response that aligns with department service level objectives.
  • Manages and supports staff in the implementation of service area deliverables, delegates responsibilities appropriately and provides guidance and motivation to achieve outcomes.
  • Manages and attends emergency calls and training sessions, oversees maintenance of apparatus and fire equipment.
    • Commands the scene as assigned.
    • Maintains the safety of firefighters at all times.
    • Maintains knowledge of all strategic and tactical methods of dealing with firefighting, rescue and emergency control, including incidents involving dangerous goods.
    • Assists with investigation of fire cause and origin.
  • Researches, plans and implements day-to-day operational activities that continually enhance the quality and delivery of services through efficiencies and innovation.
  • Provides consistent mentorship, guidance and leadership to all fire personnel.
    • Confirms the full complement of firefighters are available for each full-time shift and manages the firefighters within the platoon.
    • Provides oversight to all firefighters while on shift (includes all casual, paid on-call, full-time firefighters).
    • Participates in hiring and promotion activities of open positions.
    • Conducts performance reviews for firefighters and supports the performance management process for firefighters.
    • Provides ongoing recognition of staff.
  • Assists the Deputy Fire Chiefs with incident and activity reports, payroll approval, metrics tracking, scheduling, budget proposals, policy and procedure compliance, and other various administrative responsibilities.
    • Verifies that documentation of emergency events and fire personnel time tracking is accurately completed, submitted and retained as per records management retention guidelines and established timelines.
    • Monitors the fire stations, apparatus and equipment maintenance programs to ensure response readiness.
    • Reports any issues and maintenance requirements to direct supervisor and the appropriate Deputy Fire Chief.
    • Performs Fire Guardian duties.
  • Purchases goods/services on behalf of the County, within their assigned authority, ensuring efficient, responsible use of funds.
  • Participates and leads ongoing health and safety initiatives.
    • Develops safe work practices.
    • Performs as Incident Safety Officer duties as required.
    • Participates in incident investigations as required.
  • Coordinates with appropriate Deputy Fire Chief to develop and deliver training and development plans for all fire stations in the county.
  • Participates in the development and planning of fire prevention and public education activities.
  • Adheres to guidelines, rules, regulations, policies and procedures as outlines in the Leduc County and Leduc County Fire Services’ Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) documents.
  • Accountable for working in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and participation in the Health, Safety and Wellness Program.
  • Performs related duties as required and assigned.

What you need to succeed

Must-have

  • A National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certification for NFPA 1001-Level I and II.
  • NFPA 1002 Operator, pump, and aerial (or equivalent).
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level I.
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I.
  • Incident Command System (ICS100 and ICS200).
  • Minimum Group A Safety Codes Officer.
  • Minimum First Medical Responder (FMR) medical certificate.
  • Five (5) years of management or supervisory experience, within fire services, with knowledge of fire emergency scene management.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of tools and other database and spreadsheet applications.
  • A class 5 driver’s license with Q endorsement.
  • Successful security clearance is required to work in the vulnerability sector.
  • Must be able available for shift work and successfully complete a medical and psychological health assessment.

Nice to have

A class 3 driver’s license with Q endorsement (airbrakes), experience in FirePro and familiarity with municipal governance, operations, and knowledge of rural communities are assets. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
